DebiCheck vs Registered Mandate vs EFT Debit Orders: Which Is Right for Your Business

Choosing the right debit order solution

Debit orders remain one of the most effective ways for South African businesses to collect recurring payments. However, not all debit order solutions work in the same way.

Businesses today can choose between DebiCheck, Registered Mandate (RM) and EFT Debit Orders. Each solution has its own strengths and is designed for different collection requirements.

The right choice depends on factors such as your customer base, your appetite for authentication and the type of accounts you’re collecting from.

DebiCheck: Best for authenticated consumer collections

DebiCheck is an authenticated debit order solution: the payer confirms the mandate directly with their bank before collections begin. Once authenticated, the customer’s bank stores the mandate and validates future collections against those agreed terms. This helps reduce disputes relating to unauthorised debit orders while giving both businesses and consumers greater confidence in the collection process.

DebiCheck is particularly well suited to businesses that collect recurring payments from consumer accounts and want the added protection of bank-authenticated mandates.

Registered Mandate (RM): Flexible collections without bank authentication

Registered Mandate (RM) is a non-authenticated debit order solution. Unlike DebiCheck, the customer does not authenticate the mandate directly with their bank before collections begin. Instead, the business retains the customer’s consent to collect through a signed paper, electronic, or voice-recorded mandate. Although the mandate is not authenticated by the payer, a record of it is stored in the consumer’s bank mandate register, increasing transparency and providing greater visibility of the collection arrangement.

RM supports collections from both consumer (B2C) and juristic (business) accounts, making it a practical option for organisations that collect from companies (B2B) as well as individuals. It also supports both once-off and recurring collections, while still offering tracking which is a representment capability for up to ten days after the initial collection attempt.

EFT Debit Orders: A proven solution for traditional collections

EFT Debit Orders remain one of South Africa’s most widely used debit order solutions.

Like Registered Mandates, EFT Debit Orders are non-authenticated, meaning the mandate is held by the business rather than stored at the customer’s bank. EFT also supports collections from both consumer and juristic accounts, making them a practical option for many B2B collection environments.

Collections are processed later in the day using a batch processing window, making EFT Debit Orders particularly suitable where immediate or early-morning processing isn’t required.

For many organisations, EFT Debit Orders continue to provide a reliable and cost-effective solution for recurring collections.

Which solution should you choose?

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer.

Businesses collecting from consumers where mandate authentication is important may find DebiCheck the best fit.

Businesses that collect from both consumers and juristic entities, or require greater flexibility for once-off and recurring collections, may require Registered Mandate or EFT Debit Orders.

The right solution depends on your customer profile, collection strategy and operational requirements.
